PEACE BOAT GLOBAL VOYAGES FOR PEACE

Peace Boat is a non-profit NGO registered as a partner of the United Nations, it has Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Peace Boat brings grassroots voices and perspectives from civil society around the world to the UN through participation in issues such as disarmament, peace, international security, human rights gender equality, climate action, environmental protection and sustainable development. In recent years the NGO has demonstrated an increasingly strong synergy between sustainable peace and the sustainable development agenda. On October 16, 2017 Peace Boat allowed guests aboard to find out more about its travel program and to promote awareness of these global issues.

Peace Boat’s Goal:

To use education as a means to build a culture of peace and sustainability around the world.

  • Peace Boat provides an education through exposure to new concepts, issues and perspectives. The cruise adopts different methods of teaching. Classes are centred on keeping an open mind towards cultural differences, sharing opinions, as well as encouraging discussion around the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. These are all his subjects of conscience that the people of the world need but mostly forget.

  • This theory is then combined with on-the-ground experiences through direct contact with communities and cultures. This includes meetings with government officials, NGO leaders and community builders.

  • Students will lead projects by participating in peacebuilding actions and events in the countries they visit. They will examine the root causes of local and global problems, education, compassion, empathy and responsibility as global citizens. The notion of ‘human capital’ will be at the heart of the project.

  • The students are then encouraged to apply their new-found knowledge towards future projects. The programme is the perfect combination between learning, networking and practising. All the while aboard a cruise ship.

Peace Boat’s Past Achievements:

  • Since 2009 Peace Boat has supported the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) campaign. It renewed its commitment to building a more equitable and sustainable world by pledging its support for the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As a committed campaigner for the SDGs, in August 2016, Peace Boat proudly unveiled the vibrant SDGs logo on its hull during the departure ceremony of the 92nd Global Voyage in Yokohama (Japan), which was dedicated to raising awareness for the SDGs.

  • Young people from Africa and Asia joined a program organized with the United Nations Millennium Campaign. The specialized MDGs training program, developed an understanding of the possibilities and challenges faced in eradicating poverty. Peace Boat has long been involved in local and global initiatives to eradicate poverty in the world, and worked with the United Nations Millennium Campaign (UNMC) and the global Call to action against poverty (GCAP- Japan) to raise awareness about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

  • Young people from New York City travelled to Latin America to learn about sustainable development and international cooperation. They helped to an indigenous village in Panama to construct safer and more sustainable infrastructure. This program was organized in conjunction with the Music and Art Peace Academy, Universal Models for Peace, and Mythic Bridge.
